Alan Hansen sparks new racism storm following 'coloured' comments
22 December 2011

Alan Hansen has been heavily critised for using the word 'coloured' to describe black footballers.

The former Liverpool defender has "unreservedly" apologised for twice using the word "coloured" during last night's 'Match Of The Day' programme.

While discussing the Suarez farce and the John Terry situation, Hansen said: "I think there's a lot of coloured players in all the major teams and there are lots of coloured players who are probably the best in the Premier League. If you look at 25 or 30 years ago it was probably in a bad way - not as bad as some of the other nations on the continent - but certainly there is always, always room for improvement."

Hansen, who receives £40,000 for each MOTD appearance, will be hoping the BBC don't hand him an 8-match ban.
