The endless self-pity is getting nauseating. Can we pick things up a bit? Yes, our league positing is not good enough... yes we're are in a run of bad results... but please stop acting like we're Rochedale! Things change quickly... patterns alter season to season. A good summer of strengthening and some careful decision making can make all the difference between competing for the top four and missing out. We didn't have a bumper transfer window last autumn but that doesn't mean we never will again. We've proven that we can beat the best in cup games... now we have to fine-tune the squad for consistency in the league. We have to find those players to turn our endless close chances into goals... and our domination into wins. We have to make tough decisions on players that aren't (or are no longer) top four material - like Dirk Kuyt. If anything, it's an exciting time and we should embrace the challenges ahead... not endlessly moaning and wallowing in self-pity because we have to slum it with two domestic cup finals. Can Downing, Henderson, Carroll turn the corner? Can we find that 30 goal scorer to build a top four strike force. Can we find a magic playmaker to complement our rather one-dimensional midfield? Can we get a bit more speed down the flanks... maybe some crossing consistency? Who will emerge from our youth ranks? Will Kelly, Robinson, Flannagan, Spearing, Shelvey, etc., make the grade? Will some of them be sacrificed for better prospects? Will we win the cup double? Will we go on a decent run in Europe next year? Will any stadium development be announced? What will the changes be in the summer?
Is this really a bad time to be a Liverpool fan? Should I really feel sorry for those fans at the game staring at the ground and wondering what's for their tea... while their are thousands of poor kids who would give their right arm for a chance to cheer the team win or lose? The winds will change... they always do... teams will rise and fall. The Evertons, Spurs, and Newcastles of the world will sneak into the CL spaces once in a while... but they never stay there long before slipping back down. A lot of teams above us will go potless this season... and the league may look quite different this time next year.
Preaching doom and gloom is convenient and somewhat safe... but I believe Liverpool will rise more quickly than people project. They are missing elements and components... and a wiser and more studied ownership group will get better in the off-season. We are a more attractive club than people give us credit for... and there are always talented players to be had and gems to uncover. Our academy is in good shape and we may win two out of three competitions this year, although the main goal has been missed in the league. What I saw against West Brom was a mental thing.... we're in the grip of some virus in home games against lower opposition... but it will pass.
I don't expect other fans to pity us... many of them would gladly change places with us. Therefore the self-pity and endless whinging from our own fans is just not edifying at all. It's easy to sing YNWA when we're winning European cups... but now is the time to toughen up and practice it.
