I think thundyr brings up a great point that I forgot to mention. The reason behind this idea is to slowly take Gerrard out of the side. He has been a great servant for this club but it seems the longer he remains the longer he is dragging the club down with him, similar style to Carragher. Gerrard needs to be dropped if he is not performing well like any other player, no more preferable treatment. You can argue that he is irreplaceable and I get where you are coming from but I think its time to slowly take him out of the side for the good of the club. We need a new blood to step up.
For me it comes down to a simple question: who among our players can remain fit all season and is consistently good in his position where he is the first choice player? There is only one player who springs to mind, and that's Lucas. Word to Skrtel, but he's not consistent enough and is still fighting with Carra for his place in the side - Lucas has no equal as a DM at LFC, perhaps no equal even in England.
Gerrard this season and last has rarely been on the pitch, and only occasionally leading by example. He's still first pick in his position when he's fit, but I'm beginning to doubt his value
as captain because he's not a regular in the side. If he could play 50 games we wouldn't be having this discussion, but it's abundantly clear he can't. And if he's not captain, then he knows he can and will be dropped if he's not living up to his reputation, which will either serve as inspiration for better general performance from him or will give more chances for players like Shelvey, Henderson, and Suso to get game time. Quite happy for Gerrard to be vice-captain, of course - we mustn't throw away his leadership qualities.
