Maybe they're trying to save money by getting squad players on a free or loan basis and having the money available to buy a player who will make a difference.

Exactly. You don't just buy a player simply because he's slightly better than a player we already have - and a player that's not even first choice for us, at that.

I rate Lucas highly, and I can't see us signing someone better than him in that position, 1. Because they'd cost big bucks, and 2. Because there's no real need for it. I'd like to see us sign someone who can compete with Lucas though, or at the least, provide quality backup. Is Lassana Diarra still knocking about, or what's his status?
