Reina - Not the player he was
Suarez - The best out of the lot
Gerrard - Not the player he was
Carroll - Not good enough on the basis of most of last season, might not even get another to prove otherwise.
Johnson - As poor as Enrique
Bellamy - Doesn't play every game, played well in a couple of games last season, might not even be a Liverpool player next season
Downing - Not one goal or assist in an entire premier league season
Borini - Remains to be seen
Kelly - One of our better young players
So, you can bring in all of those you have mentioned, are we REALLY going to do better than what we did last season? Eh?
Yes I do actually. See, you're looking at it based on individual player's performances last season when, much respect as I have for Kenny Dalglish, our tactics were appalling.
I'm sure you'll just read this list as excuses, but there's nothing I can do for the blinkered.
Reina - is best as a sweeper-keeper, a role he's not played for 2 seasons and
coincidentally both of which were his worst for the club. I most certainly do not expect him to be worse while in a system that should suit him.
Suarez - Rodgers will build the side around him, nuff said.
Gerrard - has the best cross and dead ball delivery in the squad, still has the pace, maybe lost the hunger. With Lucas back Gerrard should play on the right, and as long as he listens to the manager he'll do well. His fitness is a concern, but he's not 18 anymore.
Carroll - Despite the detractors I think he will do well this season. I may be proved to be wrong and he will be sold/loaned, or will stay and underperform, but he's got time on his side (if not the supporters).
Johnson - much better than Enrique, and while I'm partial to Kelly I think LFC is much stronger with Johnson than without, particularly since he's proven useful cover at LB. Rodgers system should be good for him too as it relies on active full backs.
Bellamy - yes, he has fitness issues. He's still a great player, as he's proved under Dalglish and Pearce yesterday. He's excellent cover for our forward positions. Never underestimate the value of squad depth.
Downing - if he's pressed back into a role to provide service rather than goals he'll do better, and he will have to anyway with Pacheco and Sterling impressing on tour in the same position (and with the right spoken for with Suarez and Bellamy) and probably Borini if he's not played in the middle.
Borini - 21 years old. No reason to judge him even at the end of this season.
Kelly - Will continue to improve.
There is also the not insignificant improvement in the performance of a squad when experienced players of quality get on the pitch at the same time. So say we are dire because our second string couldn't beat a mostly first string Roma side further into their pre-season preparation really is going too far. I hardly see what mirror-looking is required on my side; your comments thus far suggest it is you who need it.
I didn't say we were going to be world beaters - there is an obvious amount of work left to be done. However after what? A month of second string training? You already feel we're too bad to come good. I stand by my original assessment of your OP, or is it your attitude that is at fault?
