Just wondering if we're obsessed with 4-3-3 going into this season. I don't think I've seen so much emphasis on a specific system going into previous seasons.

Shouldn't we be keeping an open mind, at least publicly, rather than broadcasting to all opponents how we're planning to set up?

Shouldn't we be flexible enough to deploy systems that suit the players we have, at least to start with, and/or the teams and systems we're likely to come up against? Hence perhaps why it's definitely worth keeping someone like Carroll and giving him a chance to adapt to the new system. i.e. because he also has qualities we might need when we need to change our approach sometimes.

I think the "obsession" with 4-3-3 is that it is extremely flexible as you can flow between 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, and 4-2-4 without needing different players. The demands on the wingers are high, which means one tends to have exciting players in those roles so the football is also extremely watchable. 3 midfielders to dominate a traditional 2, 3 forwards to stretch a traditional back 4, a DM to break up play or fall back into a back 3, wingbacks set to attack, defending from the front - these are the tools for destroying the majority of sides that play "The English Way".

I also happen to feel that 4-3-3 is the best way to get the best out of Suarez and Carroll.

There is no reason whatsoever to be apprehensive about playing 4-3-3!

If the 4-3-3 we used against Spurs is the system we are playing you might as well say the formation hasn't changed really..

4-2-3-1 / 4-5-1... But that formation the other day was no where near a true 4-3-3

I dont go along with all these formation stuff, it's all about if your best 11 plays better than your opponents best 11.

Fully agree thundyr, fluid system defending f,rom the front and attacking from the back, with all eleven players. So fluid that the formation is constantly evolving, forming and reforming, having started as 1,2,1,2,2,2,1 very difficult to play against when we'll organised with each player knowing the movement, patterns and the rotation.

To be honest, if you set yourself up in anything other than 4-3-3 these days, you're just asking for trouble. Nearly every other team plays some variation of a 4-3-3 these days, so if you stick only 2 in the midfield, chances are you're going to lose the midfield battle. Unless your two midfielders are Cabaye and Tiote, who seem to be everywhere all the time...

Around halfway through last season when it was obvious that we were not getting players into the box I posted the suggestion that we should go 4, 3,3 but I got shot down like an albatross in a becalmed sea, now everyone is opting for 4,3, 3 how fashions change!

'Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple.' Bill Shanks...

I rest my case, glad this clears things up regardaing all this formation nonesense, pity i have to put some people back in there places in order to prove a point, but nevermind...
